The Sheng is a traditional Chinese mouth organ. It is played by both blowing into as well as drawing air into the instrument. Shengs come in various shapes, sizes, and functions. Some Shengs are chromatic, some are pentatonic, and some even have their own tunings.
The Shengs widely used in orchestras and ensembles are the Gao Yin Sheng (Soprano), Zhong Yin Sheng (Alto), Ci Zhong Yin Sheng (Tenor), and the Di Yin Sheng (Bass). These Shengs are chromatic, and have mechanical levers to allow the players to control each pipe and also to play chords. They have a brassy and metallic feel when played hard, and have a warm and gentle tone when played calmly.

Crafted from Bamboo, the bamboo used to make a good Sheng should be dried for an extended period of time, improving both its tone color as well as lifespan. The body is made out of stainless steel that is chrome plated, and the metal pipes are made of lacquered copper.
